As dark grey clouds loom over Barren County, and rain intermittently falls across the region, Glasgow-Barren County Emergency Management wants to remind Barren Countians of severe weather safety.
According to a weather overview release from the National Weather Service at 4:45 a.m. on May 7 much of Kentucky is under a severe storm prediction for Tuesday, May 7, through the morning of Thursday, May 9. The hazardous weather outlook from the NWS states that “multiple rounds of strong to severe storms are possible this afternoon into the overnight hours [with] damaging straight line wind gusts, large hail and tornadoes are possible in severe storms.”
In conjunction with this on Wednesday Kentuckians should expect a possible 1-3 inches of rainfall with a slight risk of flash flooding in the morning into the night.
Emergency management, given the potential for severe weather and slight risk of tornados, put out on its social media the location of its ten “Tornado Safe Rooms.”

“The biggest thing I’ve got to say is have a weather radio or have your cellphone fully charged before you go to bed especially tomorrow night,” Garland Gilliam, emergency management director, said. “Don’t rely on tornado sirens when inside the house. The other thing is if you’re relying on…the tornado safe rooms after the sirens have gone off it’s too late. We don’t want anyone getting caught driving trying to get to the safe rooms. So what I recommend is [setting] weather radios to Warren County so you can hear if they have a tornado warning and can head to a safe room in Barren County.”
Gilliam said emergency management had scheduled conference calls with both Frankfort and the National Weather Service and should have more specific information by 1 p.m.
“As soon as we get all [the information] we’ll post that on Facebook,” Gilliam said.
