Both Barren County and Glasgow high school bands march into post-season Saturday. While the schools are less than three miles apart, they will perform in locations 192 miles from each other.
Barren County competes in Class 4A, East Division, which will be at Madison Southern High School in Berea, Ky.
“I feel good about [Saturday]. The kids have been working really hard this season [and] they’re excited about it,” said Trojans band director John Sturgeon. “We’re in the hardest class in the state. It’s sort of a coin toss because you’re going to have some really good bands that are left behind on Saturday, but I feel good that the students are in a good position to be really successful this weekend.”
To advance from the Regional Quarterfinals, Barren must finish in the Top 6. There will be 12 bands competing. Sturgeon said his band is comprised of 70 members. The Trojans will perform at 1:55 central time.
The Scotties will compete the Class 1A, West Regional Quarterfinals at Daviess County High School in Owensboro. They will take the field at 6:30 p.m. central time.
Anthony Thompson, in his first year as Glasgow’s band director, said, “I’m really excited…. We’re, of course, aiming for state champs, but our priorities come more from within the organization.”
“If we do what we do well then we don’t have to worry about competing with other bands because at that point we will be the best,” he said. “I think we have a good shot of winning out as long as we work hard.”
Thompson has 25 band members performing.
There are 11 bands competing at Glasgow’s regional. To advance to the semifinals at University of Louisville on Oct. 26, the Scotties also must finish in the Top 6.
