A Cave City cemetery relocation and an interlocal agreement with Edmonson County about a road name are some of the items of new business on the Barren County Fiscal Court’s agenda.
The seven county magistrates will meet at 9 a.m. on June 17 with numerous reports, invoices and resolutions to approve, including a second reading of the 2025-26 fiscal year budget.
Among them is a resolution “authorizing the relocation of cemetery/graves” in Cave City. Bobby Richardson, speaking and acting on behalf of the Kentucky Industrial Alliance, which bought a significant portion of newly annexed land in Cave City between Interstate 65 and the railroad tracks, asked for the magistrates’ relocation approval at the March 18 court meeting, saying there were two abandon cemeteries — the Overstreet and Shaw cemeteries — on the property that had been abandoned for at least 10 years, indicated by the “large trees and undergrowth.”
Also, at the March meeting, he said the graves would be relocated to Cave City’s Cemetery “under the direction of a licensed funeral director.” The resolution specifies that the relocation will be at the expense of Kentucky Industrial Alliance.
There is also an interlocal agreement with Edmonson County up for approval. The roadway in question is Slave Cave Road, which is near Mammoth Cave National Park and “traverses both counties.” Wanting the road “to better reflect the area’s historical and cultural significance and to honor [a family] whose contributions to the Mammoth Cave Region are well-documented and respected,” the resolution renames the road to Bransford Trail.
Matt and Nick Bransford, along with Stephen Bishop, were some of the earliest explorers of Mammoth Cave, according to the Glasgow-Barren County tourism website.
“Upon execution of the agreement, both counties shall coordinate with the appropriate mapping, 911, postal, and transportation authorities to implement the name change officially and efficiently,” the resolution states.
