The magistrates of the Administration and Budget Committee voiced their full support for a Barren County regional licensing office.
Aside from briefly discussing the county’s tax rate, which the full Barren County Fiscal Court approved at 12.6 cents per $100 of assessed value, Magistrates Jeff Botts, Brad Groce and Marty Kinslow heard updates on the old health department building on West Washington Street from Barren County Judge-Executive Jamie Bewley Byrd.
As previously reported, the building is being considered for a new regional licensing office, which would allow Barren County residents to forgo traveling to Columbia or Bowling Green when they need to renew their driver’s license.
“My plan is that we get them here,” Byrd said. “We do whatever we’ve got to do to get them here.”
“Well I know the public is definitely not going to be against this,” Botts said.
“They’ll be doing cartwheels,” Kinslow responded.
Byrd said the building “fits the mold” of what they are looking for in terms of space and parking. The office is looking to locate in a space between 2,000-3,000 square feet “with a minimum of 20 to 30 parking spaces, or available street parking or garage parking.”
She added transportation officials would be doing a site visit of the property on Aug. 27.
“The health department [building] is a game changer,” Byrd said. “It is the answer.”
