A Red Cross Elementary School teacher is receiving statewide attention for his work in bettering the life of a student.
Scott Johnson, a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics teacher at the Barren County school, was profiled in the online publication Kentucky Teacher, which is a part of the Kentucky Department of Education. In September Johnson 3-D printed a prosthetic hand for fourth grader Jackson Farmer, who was born without his right hand.
Jackson’s mother, Kayla Danielle Kerney, said Johnson changed Jackson’s life.
“I am truly blessed that [Johnson] did this, I mean it has made our family so happy,” she said in the original reporting. “Mr. Johnson is a hometown hero in my heart because he changed my son’s life. He’s all smiles now.

Johnson was also named the 2025 elementary teacher of the year by the Kentucky Department of Education and the governor’s office and he is also an ambassador for the GoTeachKY initiative.
