The Barren County Family YMCA has announced plans to open its new senior wing this spring. The 3,000 square-foot addition to its facilities focuses on enhancing the quality of life through social and exercise opportunities.
The funding for the project came from a $750,000 Community Block Development Grant. The expanded space underscores the YMCA’s ongoing commitment to serve its senior members, who make up the largest segment of the organization’s membership.
“Realizing how much the Barren County Family YMCA means to so many here in south central Kentucky, I cannot be more excited about this building addition and its potential for greater and even more impacts for our senior population,” said Jackie Brown, a senior member and board member. “I encourage everybody, regardless of age, to partake of the opportunities offered at our local YMCA.”
Larry Glass of Larry Glass Construction, who completed the site work, also expressed pride in contributing to a project that enhances service to Glasgow’s senior citizens, noting: “This expansion will enhance the YMCA’s ability to serve our senior citizens, who are among the most valued members of our Glasgow community.”
As part of personal and family commitment, Larry Glass shared: “This project holds special meaning for my sister, Sherry Thompson, and me, as it was the first project entrusted to us following our father’s passing last February. Our father was a strong supporter of the YMCA, and we are proud to continue honoring his legacy through our work and ongoing support of the organization.”
CEO Tara Bailey has highlighted the essential role of mobility and socializing in seniors’ health, emphasizing why such a space is critical for the community. “When they have more mobility and more stability, it’s safer for them,” she said. “You have less falls if they’re able to steady themselves.”
She did also note that the original layout for the wing has changed. “Basically, what we’ll be getting is a shell,” she said. The plans when first announced featured items such as a stage for speakers and instructors, audio equipment and storage that will now need to be added contingent on the facility’s fundraising efforts.
“We are well over the $750,000,” she explained. Proceeds from upcoming events like March’s Purse and Pamper Bingo will go directly to outfitting the new addition. “The more the community invests, the more it becomes their center.”
