The Glasgow-Barren County Tourist and Convention Commission approved two sponsorships for local events during its regular meeting on Tuesday at the tourism office.
BRAWA’s Derby Dog Festival set for April 25 received a $750 sponsorship, and Kentucky Bass Nation received a $1,000 sponsorship for a fishing tournament on April 11. Both events will take place at Barren River Lake State Resort Park and these tourism funds are to be used for marketing.
MacLean Lessenberry, executive director of the commission, told Glasgow News 1 after the meeting that these events will have a positive effect on area tourism.
“Fishing tournaments bring in huge numbers of folks from outside of our area to enjoy Barren River Lake, which is one of our biggest tourism assets in the area,” Lessenberry said. “The Derby Dog Festival also adds a lot of emphasis on our state park which is fabulous and it has brought in numbers that we weren’t sure at the beginning were gonna happen but it’s proved to be a really successful and repeatable event.”
In other business, nearly $17,000 was collected in January for tourism by the City of Glasgow, according to Tina Wood, director of administrative services for the commission.
