The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is evaluating both short-term and long-term solutions in an effort to address community concerns regarding Columbia Avenue.
In an email sent to Glasgow News 1 by District 3 Public Information Officer Wes Watt, the cabinet agrees that improvements are needed and they do not yet have a timeline as cabinet personnel work “to identify and secure” requisite funding.
“We understand the concerns regarding pavement conditions on Columbia Avenue and agree that improvements are needed,” Watt said. “We are carefully evaluating both short-term and long-term solutions to address the pavement conditions. At the same time, we are working to identify and secure the necessary funding. Although a timeline has not yet been established, we are actively progressing through each step and will share updates as more information becomes available. Repairs will continue to be made as needed.”
Watt told Glasgow News 1 that the design has been completed, but no funds were authorized for the right-of-way or utility phases.
“Those have to be done first before construction funds can be authorized,” Watt said.
Pavement rehabilitation is expected to cost roughly $7.6 million and was expected to begin by this year at the soonest, according to District 3 Chief Engineer Joe Plunk, who spoke with Glasgow News 1 in December 2024. Specifically, the section of the state-maintained road that will undergo this rehabilitation is between Front Street and the Glasgow High School entrance.
Plunk is on the March 9 Glasgow City Council agenda. He is expected to give a presentation, though the topic is not specified.
