Glasgow’s Memorial Day ceremony is moving indoors this year, but the goal remains the same: honoring local men and women who died in service to the country.
Veteran and organizer Matt Mutter said the ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. Monday, May 25, inside the city council chambers at Glasgow City Hall on the public square.
The event is usually at the Glasgow Municipal Cemetery, but Mutter said he decided to move it early because of a strong chance of rain in the forecast. He said he did not want to wait until the last minute to make a call and wanted to give people time to adjust their plans.
Mutter said there will be a guest speaker and an indoor ceremony to honor fallen veterans. He added that the community band likely will not be able to perform in the tighter quarters inside city hall.
In the days leading up to Memorial Day, volunteers are being asked to help place flags on veterans’ graves at the cemetery on Leslie Avenue. Mutter said work will begin at 7 a.m. Saturday, rain or shine, to place small American flags at every veteran’s grave. He estimated that volunteers will put out 1,100 to 1,200 flags.
Mutter said he usually sees local officials, JROTC members and community volunteers join in the effort and that families often send messages of thanks afterward. He encouraged anyone in the community to come out and help, even if they can only stay for a short time.
