Glasgow officials say the city has taken a major step in how it manages local trash, recycling and environmental protection with the opening of a newly completed landfill cell.
On Thursday, Aug. 27, the City of Glasgow began placing waste in the restored cell, which is part of the landfill’s three-valley system and is now fully lined and ready for use.
City staff say the new cell represents more than just additional space for garbage.
According to environmental and compliance specialist L.D. Hunt, the landfill is a regulated facility that operates under strict environmental rules rather than a simple dump.
From the moment trucks arrive, waste is compacted to conserve space and liquids are captured instead of being allowed to seep into surrounding soil.
A system beneath the landfill directs that liquid through pipes to lift stations, where it is pumped to a water treatment facility for cleaning and treatment.
The new cell has multiple layers of protection, including specialized fabric and plastic liners that are welded together to create barriers meant to prevent contamination of groundwater.
Environmental monitoring extends beyond the landfill’s fence line, with the local creek just outside the site regularly tested by the water treatment center.
The third valley at the landfill required restoration work, including a new lining system and French drain infrastructure to help collect and direct liquids through the landfill’s management system.
With that work complete, city officials say the site now has significant added capacity and is projected to provide roughly 55 to 65 more years of service life under current conditions and responsible management.
Mayor Henry Royse said the operation is one of the most important city services that residents rarely see, touching every household in Glasgow.
Royse said he was struck by the level of science, engineering and environmental responsibility involved, from groundwater protection to recycling, water treatment and waste-to-energy technology.
One of the most visible examples is the system that turns waste into power.
As trash decomposes underground, it produces methane gas that is collected through monitoring wells and routed to an engine.
According to Hunt, that gas is converted into electricity and distributed for use, generating enough power for approximately 500 to 800 homes on average.
The city has also increased its focus on recycling as it seeks to preserve limited landfill space.
Hunt encouraged residents to take a few extra seconds at home to sort trash and recycling, noting that even small choices can add up when spread across thousands of households.
Batteries are a particular concern, because they can become serious fire hazards when crushed, especially during hot weather.
Hunt said residents should remove batteries from toys, equipment and other items before throwing them away to reduce the risk of fires.
Operating the landfill safely requires more than simply moving and covering trash.
Employees maintain collection systems, build and repair roads within the facility, manage waste placement and monitor environmental safeguards throughout the site.
The landfill also faces substantial state oversight.
Glasgow currently maintains about $6.6 million in restricted reserve funds so the landfill could be shut down safely and immediately in an emergency or breach, and the required amount is recalculated monthly by the state.
Royse said the opening of the new cell is a reminder that good government includes work residents rarely think about, from protecting drinking water to making responsible use of resources.
He said the landfill improvements are an investment intended to give Glasgow the infrastructure it needs for generations and something the community can be proud of.
