Glasgow News 1
Sheri Lee with the Hero Foundation and April Bowman with Wabuck Development have issued a statement ahead of tonight’s Glasgow City Council meeting.
They addressed the council’s plan to rezone nearly three acres along West Washington Street where the foundation has proposed to build low-income housing for senior citizens. Some residents who own property on the street have opposed the development, known has Highland Heights.
Highland Heights would provide 75 one-bedroom apartments for older residents in Glasgow, according to the statement. The development is a few yards from the former historic Houchens warehouse at West Washington and Leslie Avenue.
The statement calls for careful review of the development’s location and design while also considering the cost of delaying or losing the homes. It presents the housing as an opportunity for longtime residents to remain in their community as they age.
The statement focuses on older residents living on fixed incomes who must stretch their resources across housing, utilities, groceries and medical needs. It argues that discussions about historic character should also account for those residents’ housing needs.
The former Houchens warehouse was replaced with a retail store, according to the supplied information. The statement points to that replacement in questioning how historic character, redevelopment and community benefits are weighed across projects.
The statement also argues that support for affordable housing must include a feasible location. It expresses the view that Highland Heights could fit within the neighborhood. The release included design information, and details of a letter sent to city council members.
