The Boys & Girls Club of Glasgow/Barren County held a groundbreaking Monday, Nov. 2, for the new Guilfoil Recreation Center. Kelly Craft contributed funding for the facility, which will serve children in Glasgow and Barren County.
The ceremony took place at the club, 801 Columbia Ave. in Glasgow. Boys & Girls Club of Glasgow/Barren County CEO Mallie Boston, Craft, construction representatives and a club member spoke about the project and the opportunities they hope it will provide.
Boston said the center will include basketball courts, batting cages, classrooms and a stage. She described spaces where children could compete, learn and gain confidence speaking before a crowd. She added that “this is more than i could ever imagine.”
The center also carries a family connection. Craft said it honors her parents, recalling that her father was a farmer and town veterinarian who helped neighbors at all hours, while her mother taught home economics at Glasgow High School.
“Mom and dad believed that every child had something special in them,” Craft said. “Someone just had to notice.”
Boston said the club has spent 20 years giving children a safe place to go, adults who believe in them and encouragement to dream bigger. She urged children to play, study and practice kindness in the new center, then return someday to help another child.
A sixth-grade club member thanked Craft and described hopes for more teams, games and practices, along with more children having a safe place after school. The student said the project means more to members than a new building.
