Cave City graves will be moved.
The seven Barren County magistrates unanimously approved a resolution authorizing the relocation of graves to the nearby Cave City City Cemetery during the June 17 Barren County Fiscal Court. The graves are believed to be members of the Shaw, Overstreet and West families, according to genealogists.
Bobby Richardson, speaking and acting on behalf of the Kentucky Industrial Alliance, which bought a significant portion of newly annexed land in Cave City between Interstate 65 and the railroad tracks, asked for the magistrates’ relocation approval at the March 18 court meeting, saying there were graves on the property that had been abandoned for at least 10 years, indicated by the “large trees and undergrowth.”
At the June 16 Cave City Council meeting, Mayor Dwayne Hatcher said the Cave City Cemetery Commission had “consented to the relocation” with the company agreeing to pay the $500 per grave for the 20 to 25 that currently rest in the cemetery.
The graves will be relocated to the city cemetery “under the direction of a licensed funeral director” and in compliance with state guidelines, according to the adopted resolution.
The magistrates did not address a street name change that was on the meeting’s agenda.
Slave Cave Road will remain, for now. Barren County Judge-Executive Jamie Bewley Byrd said a proposed interlocal agreement would not be addressed until the two county attorneys could have further discussion.
“We are moving this to the next meeting because there needs to be some more communication,” Byrd said. “This has been asked of us by Edmonson County because they’re having trouble with the mail being delivered because they changed [its name] two years ago. It’s the same road and we haven’t changed it yet.”
The magistrates also had a first reading on the county administration ordinance, making a few changes to overtime and holiday payment. Magistrate Tim Durham was the sole no vote on that, saying “it was too soon” to vote after receiving it the day before.
A special-called meeting is planned for Friday, June 20, though the time has not been decided.
