A Glasgow man allegedly attempted to steal an ATM machine from a Columbia Avenue convenience store Thursday.
Glasgow police were called to Daily Stop Store off Columbia Avenue on Thursday in reference to a burglary, according to a press release from the police department. At the store, officers saw the front door had been broken out and “items within the store had been thrown throughout the store.” Someone had attempted to remove the ATM machine in the store, causing significant damage. The machine was not removed.
Police officers used FLOCK cameras and surveillance to get a description of a vehicle, and to identify the suspect as Derek T. Shaffer of Glasgow, according to the press release. “Officers were able to locate the vehicle used in the crime and Shaffer at a residence on Jefferson Street where he was taken into custody without incident.”
Shaffer is charged with third-degree burglary, first-degree criminal mischief, and possession of burglary tools. He was lodged in the Barren County Detention Center.
The arrest was made by Glasgow police detective Andrew Moore.
Shaffer’s initial court appearance is set for Monday, July 7, at 12:30 p.m.
