Barren County Schools Board of Education approved to lower the property tax rate and keep the motor vehicle tax the same during its regular monthly meeting Thursday evening at the district’s central office.
“It is my recommendation to the board to lower the current real property tax rate,” Superintendent Amy Irwin said.
The new real property tax rate will be 62.6 cents per $100 of assessed value — down 3.1 cents from last year’s 65.7 — and the motor vehicle tax rate remains at 49.2 cents per $100 of assessed value.
Over the past two years, the real property tax rate has decreased by 4.6 cents, according to Finance Director Joe Murley.
“To provide context, the real property tax rate was 67.2 cents two years ago,” Murley said. “Last year, the board voted to reduce the rate to 65.7 cents.”
Compared to last year’s property tax rate, a $200,000 home would have around $62 of savings, according to Murley.
At the beginning of Thursday’s meeting, the board recognized Barren County High School’s Stephanie Esters as the Certified Employee of the Month and Matt McClellan as Classified Employee of the Month. High school student Karden Kinslow was also honored as the Student of the Month.
Letitia Hughes, principal of Barren County High School, spoke highly about the three individuals. She said Esters is a “model professional” and her work “represents the very best of our school district.” Hughes said McClellan is a mentor, role model and can “truly fix anything,” and that Kinslow is a “powerful ambassador” for the district’s career and technical education programs.
