It’ll take more than a federal government shutdown to stop student loans repayments.
The United States government officially shut down on Oct. 1 at 12:01 a.m. after Congress failed to pass a funding bill by the deadline, leading to a discontinuance of some services and federal employees working without pay.
Despite the shutdown, and despite the U.S. Department of Education furloughing 87 percent of its staff as the department’s contingency plan outlines, people are still expected to make payments on their student loans. Approximately 13.6 percent of Barren County residents — or 6,120 residents — have student loan debt with the median amount being $11,782, according to data from the UK Cooperative Extension Service.
