A Barren County resident, and Caverna Independent School alumnus, is one of three people set to be inducted into the Kentucky Tennis Hall of Fame.
Terry Bunnell was chosen by a committee of 11 people “from all areas of the state,” a United States Tennis Association press release states.
“Bunnell…has spent more than 40 years advancing tennis in Kentucky as a player, coach, and leader,” the press release states. “While a student at Freed-Hardeman University, Bunnell helped establish a high school tennis program at Chester County High School, [he] served several years as the assistant tennis coach at Barren County High School [and] has been an integral part of tennis in the Barren County area by organizing leagues, giving tennis lessons, and spending the last 35 years with involvement in the W.A. Weldon Tennis Tournament as a player, organizer, promoter, and tournament director.”
Bunnell has also served as the president, treasurer and board member of the association and has been the president of the Kentucky Tennis Raise a Racquet Foundation. He is currently the treasurer of the foundation, the release states. He has also been the secretary-treasurer for the association’s Southern Foundation.
“Bunnell was a co-founding organizer and member of the Kentucky High School Tennis Coaches Association,” the release states. “He continues leading initiatives to grow and improve tennis statewide.”
The newly reconstructed tennis courts at Caverna Independent Schools are named in his honor as he “spear-headed” the $200,000 project, the release states. At the ribbon-cutting ceremony, Bunnell said through his campaigning and the generosity of individuals and community organizations he was able to cover 62 percent of the cost.
The induction Ceremony is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 6, at the Louisville Marriott East in Louisville.
