A Federal Bureau of Investigation will not call or email a private individual asking, threatening, or demanding payment, according to a press release from the Glasgow Police Department.
The department stated that officers had received complaints that a scam was circulating in the community wherein a person is impersonating a federal agent “asking that [the person] withdraw cash and meet them or wire transfer [the] money to pay off their ‘trouble,’” the release stated.
FBI agents will never call or email private individuals to request payment under the threat of being arrested. Agents will also not ask a person to wire a settlement to avoid an arrest, according to the department.
A person who have fallen for this, or any other scam, are encouraged to file a report with the police department and the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center, the release stated.
