Elected officials and community members joined the Glasgow airport board to officially celebrate the opening of the new 10-bay hangar.
Glasgow Airport Chairman Scott Owens told Glasgow News 1 that this new hangar was needed as it will decrease the number of private individuals who want to lease a bay but are relegated to the waiting list due to space.
Barren County Judge-Executive Jamie Bewley Byrd called the updated facility a welcoming first impression for anyone flying into Glasgow and Barren County, saying the airport serves as a “front door” to the city and county and also highlighted the airport’s role in local economic development.
“I love the opportunity to celebrate our airport,” Byrd said. “Our airport is definitely something to be proud of. This airport is capable of many things and we’ve met many industries here at the airport…and it’s the first thing they see.”
Glasgow Mayor Henry Royse said this project has been planned for roughly four years, but things “don’t move fast” when federal funds are involved.
“Some people don’t know how important this airport is,” Royse said. “And how far it’s come and how the development of this airport has made a difference in the development of our community.”
Part of broader airport improvements, Airport leaders used the ceremony to point to additional upgrades that are planned or underway at Glasgow Municipal Airport, including new runway lighting and fuel system.
