The move to regional licensing offices was a major mistake, according to State Representative Steve Riley, who is also welcoming the possibility of one coming to Barren County.
“The regional centers [move] was one of the biggest mistakes that was made. [Licensing capabilities] needed to be stay in the counties, so we’re trying to rectify that to some degree,” Riley said on April 3. “Because of the size of Barren County [and] because of all the traffic in this area it was important we try to get a regional center back. We worked really hard to try to get that done. I’m glad it’s happened, I think it’s better for our people.”
Riley said he believed that the original goal of the shift was to streamline the state Transportation Cabinet and make the licensing process more efficient, in part by encouraging more people to renew online. However, Riley said that approach did not match how many Kentuckians actually prefer to do business with the state, noting that many residents would rather deal with licensing staff face-to-face.
“I think it was a well-intentioned move, but it was not a good move,” Riley said.
Riley added that a regional licensing center in Barren County would not just help local residents, but also drivers in neighboring Metcalfe and Monroe counties by having a closer option. Riley added that the existing regional office in Warren County has seen long lines, and he believes a Barren County center will ease that burden while bringing service back closer to home.
As previously reported, a regional licensing office for Barren County is included in the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet’s budget that is on the governor’s desk, awaiting his signature or veto. Barren County Judge-Executive Jamie Bewley Byrd echoed his sentiments, saying she was “so thankful that the public’s concerns were heard.”
