The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet will be evaluating the North Race and Front streets intersection over the next three months “to determine the most efficient traffic control option while maintaining safety,” according to a cabinet press release.
Beginning on Tuesday, April 28, the light at the intersection will switch to flashing red in all directions, which is to be treated as an all-way stop for the duration of the study, according to the release.
Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District 3 Chief Engineer Joe Plunk mentioned the possibility of the change to the Glasgow City Council in March. Council member Joe Trigg questioned the safety of that decision, given that vehicles are prone to pick up speed on the Front Street hill.
“When conditions at intersections change, Kentucky Transportation Cabinet engineers study traffic flow to determine the most appropriate traffic control method to use,” the cabinet stated in the press release. “Preliminary data shows intersection traffic counts no longer meet federal guidelines for a signal, prompting the evaluation to determine if an all-way stop would meet traffic flow needs.”
“After the study is complete, traffic engineers will analyze the data to determine whether the intersection should remain signalized or be permanently converted to an all-way stop,” the release continued.
If it is determined that a signal is still needed, a “full reconstruction of the signal system will be required,” according to the release.
