Crews at Mammoth Cave National Park are rehabilitating the walking trail in Rafinesque Hall, hardening and leveling its surface with concrete and stone pavers. According to a statement on the Mammoth Cave National Park Facebook page, the work is intended to provide a safer, easier path for visitors while protecting cave resources.
Workers are also adding lint rails to keep dust, dirt and hair from collecting on cave walls. That part of the project addresses the buildup of debris alongside the walking route.
The project includes extending the trail into an area known as Bunker Hill. The extension will provide additional space for the Discovery and Mammoth Passage tours, the statement says.
Construction does not mean the cave is closed. Several tours travel through entirely different passages that are unaffected by the project, while some routes have been adjusted to avoid the construction area.
The rehabilitation will eventually move into passages along the lower Historic Tour route. Planned improvements will reach River Hall and the Ruins of Karnak, near the base of the Mammoth Dome tower.
The statement says work in those areas will create a smoother, more durable path for tours. It identifies both expanded access and protection of cave resources as goals of the rehabilitation in the world’s longest known cave system.
