Glasgow News 1
The Glasgow Police Department has announced that Officer Johnny Vance will be its new public information officer. Vance will also serve as community engagement officer, Chief Guy Howie said during a radio interview.
The appointment follows the retirement of Maj. Terry Flatt, who handled public information among several other duties, Howie said. The chief said public information would be Vance’s primary assignment, combined with community engagement responsibilities.
Vance said his priorities begin with “truth and transparency.” He also wants to maintain a good working relationship with media representatives while bringing new ideas to the role.
Vance credited Flatt’s work and said he wants to continue it. On the community engagement side, he said he hopes to reach as many people as possible and build relationships that last for years.
Vance comes to the assignment after four years as a school resource officer. He said that experience showed him the importance of connecting with children at an early age and giving them someone they can respect.
Howie said Vance already held a Coffee with a Cop event at McDonald’s on Oct. 7. The chief said Vance would develop similar programs and attend community and neighborhood meetings to connect with residents.
