Glasgow Independent Schools students captured several awards at the Beta Club elementary state convention earlier this week in Lexington.
South Green Elementary won in the Musicology category. The following students also captured firsts in their respective competitions: Harper Gaffney, Speech; Addison Eatmon, Color Photography; Oliver Chaney, Science (fifth grade); Nelson Cassady, Math (fifth grade); Claire Woodie, Language Arts (fifth grade); and Devika Nair, Science (fourth grade).
Highland Elementary’s Everly Swift was also named a Premier Performer in the Dancer category.
“That’s something that our students get really excited about,” South Green Principal Josh Turner said of the Beta convention. “They put a lot of work into that.
“It’s a good opportunity for our students.”
Turner added that when the Beta students returned to school, South Green had a parade to celebrate their accomplishments.
“That’s something we do every year,” he said. “This year especially, we did really well.”
South Green students also won the following awards: Arabella Brooking, second place, Creative Writing; Camden Fields, second place, Math (fourth grade); Ashur Guy, third place, Performing Arts Instrumentalist; and Anderson Villatoro, fourth place, Spanish (fifth grade). South Green also won fourth place in Performing Arts Large Group.
Highland Elementary students captured the following awards: Ruby Wilson, second place, Fiber Arts; Jorgia Jones, fourth place, Jewelry; Hayes Whiteside, fourth place, Sculpture; and Bentley Turner, fifth place, Recyclable Art. Highland Elementary also won third place in Performing Arts Large Group; fourth place in Marketing & Communications and Service Learning Showcase; and fifth place in Club Trading Pin.
