Area students will soon benefit from three grants that were awarded Monday by the Tennessee Valley Authority and Glasgow Electric Plant Board.
Red Cross Elementary received a $1,500 grant while South Green Elementary and Glasgow Middle School each received $5,000 grants.
“We’re very thankful to have a number of ways through our distributor in TVA to give back to our community,” said Aaron Russell, marketing and communications director for GEPB, adding that these grants, which are available to schools in TVA’s seven-state service area, are very competitive to get, so he was happy to see three of them go to schools in Barren County.
TVA community relations specialist Jana Sublett said they awarded a total of 17 grants and that she really enjoys visiting the schools to see students participate in innovative activities and projects.
“As early as you can get these students excited about STEM, the better,” Sublett said. “Keeping that passion for STEM, too. If TVA and Glasgow Electric Plant Board can play a little bit into that, we’re excited to be a part of that.”

Red Cross STEM teacher Scott Johnson said the grant will go toward 3D printers and software that his students will be able to learn and use for various projects.
“It just continues to push forward what we do,” Johnson said.
Chad Muhlenkamp said these grants will help the Glasgow school district prepare students for the future by enhancing its STEM programs with new technology and materials.
“It’s been a great foundation to get a lot of new tools and new resources,” the Glasgow Independent Schools superintendent said. “The opportunity that it opens for our students is second to none. So we’re appreciative of being recipients of it.”
Muhlenkamp said as technology evolves, it’s important for students to learn how to critically think and problem-solve since the world of tomorrow might look completely different from today.
“Hopefully we open the doors for them for the future.”
